Knowing the Climate
Technically, the climate of the city is Atlantic tropical, with a dry season. In short, we wrote this article to help you determine the best time of year in terms of weather and seasonal events.
The average temperature in the wonderful city varies between 21.3°C (July) and 26.6°C (February). But don’t be fooled, even in winter temperatures can reach 30°C, while in summer temperatures tend to exceed 35°C and reach up to 40°C.
Let’s better understand the seasons so you can decide the best time to come to Rio de Janeiro.
See details about the weather in Rio de Janeiro in the summer
We will begin our comments with the Rio summer. This is the season of extremes and 40 degrees.
Summer in Rio de Janeiro starts at the end of December and lasts until the beginning of March. The city of Rio is hot and humid in the summer, with temperatures reaching 40°C, which further increases the feeling of heat.
Due to the high humidity, it usually rains in the late afternoon. That is, heat during the day and showers (and sometimes thunderstorms) at the end of the day or at night. But don’t worry, nothing will get in the way of your beach day!
The rains are usually short-lived at this time, but they can wreak havoc. It is not uncommon for cities to flood and topple trees.
They usually don’t do much damage, but if you’re in Rio during the summer and it starts to rain a lot, it’s a good idea to seek shelter.
If you are in a secluded area, like at CCBB, stay there until the rain stops. These days can cause traffic chaos in Rio, so it’s best to take the subway.
Summer is also the season for Carnival, which takes place in February and brings a lot of joy to the streets of Rio and to the Sambódromo da Marquês de Sapucaí.
Other events are also only held in the summer, and it is common for parties to appear during the summer and disappear when the season ends.
Autumn in Rio de Janeiro
Visiting Rio de Janeiro in autumn (from March to June) can be a fascinating experience. The weather is usually clear, sunny and pleasant, with temperatures around 23°C.
In the case of tourist spots, at this time they are emptier, there are fewer queues and most importantly: less heat!
The view from the top of Corcovado or Sugarloaf Mountain is even more beautiful under the autumn sun. Also, autumn and winter are the driest seasons of the year. So, rain is much less likely to spoil your trip.
However, at the end of autumn, in June, the traditional “festas juninas” take place. They are multicultural holidays that were born as Christian holidays in honor of some popular saints, especially Saint John.
They are common in the Northeast of Brazil and are an excellent option to taste the typical dishes there – polenta, sausage, green soups, etc. – dance a wonderful forró.
Knowing the winter
Winter in Rio de Janeiro lasts from June to September. Despite being considered the coldest season, the average temperature in the wonderful city during this period is 21°C, that is, the cold is not strong.
However, this is the time when Rio de Janeiro prefers to wear coats and other warm clothing. If you are from an area with very cold winters, it will surprise you how many people go out with fur coats or even scarves, especially on nights when temperatures are not so cold.
It rains less, but the weather tends to be less sunny and cloudy. Therefore, your trip to the beach may be compromised. The average maximum temperature reaches 25°C.
Also in winter, more precisely in early July, FLIP – Feira Literária Internacional de Paraty takes place, a very interesting literary fair in the city of Paraty, 260 km from the capital.
Weather in Rio de Janeiro in Spring
From September to December, the city enchants everyone with its beautiful spring. The temperature is slowly rising and the rainy days are coming.
Even so, temperatures are still not as hot as in summer, and the average number of rainy days is less than in the hottest season of the year.
Rio de Janeiro is a charming city full of equally beautiful places to enjoy flowers. This is a great option for tourists who like the city to be less crowded and where accommodation options are cheaper than in high season, especially if you come to the city in September and October.
To make the most of the flowering season, be sure to visit the best tourist spots in the city at this beautiful time of year.
