Our team did some research and compiled a list of the 20 coldest cities in the country based on average temperatures recorded over the past decade.
These places have a temperate climate even in summer, and in late autumn and early winter, the thermometer can reach negative temperatures. Among the coldest cities, we can cite as examples the cities of Bom Jardim da Serra (SC), Urubici (SC) and Monte Verde (MG), places that also stand out for their natural beauties.
1 Coldest cities in Brazil – Municipality of Urupema, Santa Catarina
Urupema is considered the coldest city in the country with an average temperature of only 8°C.
In February, the hottest month, the climate hovers around 18°C. At 1,425 meters above sea level, the city is one of the few municipalities in Brazil with a record of snowfall and severe frost.
The mountainous climate, preserved nature and beautiful landscapes attract tourists to this small town of just 2,500 inhabitants throughout the year.
2 Municipality of Bom Jardim da Serra, State of Santa Catarina
Bom Jardim da Serra is located in Serra do Rio do Rastro, one of the postcards of the state of Santa Catarina.
In 2017, the city’s temperature reached -7.4°C and was covered in snow. With just over 4,000 inhabitants, the city has many tourist attractions, such as beautiful gorges and more than 30 waterfalls. For those who enjoy outdoor activities, the city is the perfect destination for hiking, trails and horseback riding.
3 Municipality of São José dos Ausentes in the state of Rio Grande do Sul
With about 500 inhabitants, São José dos Ausentes has one of the coldest climates in the country and is home to the highest mountain in Rio Grande do Sul: Monte Negro.
The city experiences persistent frost and snowfall almost every year. Even in summer, the local average temperature is 18°C. The temperature in May, June and July can reach -4°C, which attracts many tourists to avoid the cold.
4 Coldest cities in Brazil – City of São Joaquim in Santa Catarina
São Joaquim, the “National Apple Capital”, is known throughout the country as a city with a cold climate.
In 2018, the thermometer reached -2.7°C. Tourists start to fill the city as soon as the forecast indicates the possibility of snow.
Major local attractions include wineries, apple and cherry plantations and city parks. The city has approximately 26,000 inhabitants.
5 City of Urubici in Santa Catarina
Located in Vale das Canoas, Urubici is also known as “Cidade Vegetal” and has about 11,000 inhabitants.
At one of the highest points in the state of Santa Catarina, the city is known for its natural beauties: caves, canyons, waterfalls and mountains.
Morro da Igreja is considered the coldest place in the country and is the main attraction of the city. The average winter temperature in this city is around 6°C.
6 City of São Gabriel in Rio Grande do Sul
San Gabriel is believed to be the last stronghold of coachmen and the oldest means of transport created by man, with approximately 62,000 inhabitants.
In winter, the city’s average temperature is 8°C, and can easily drop below 0°C.
In addition to the cold, tourists visiting the city are fascinated by the local architecture, museums and the center for the preservation of gaucho culture.
7 City of Inácio Martins in the state of Paraná
Inácio Martins is located in Serra da Esperança at 1,198 meters above sea level, the highest municipality in the state of Paraná.
The city was once settled by Europeans and now has around 11,000 inhabitants. Major tourist attractions include the old church and the Santini and Madrette waterfalls.
In winter, the average temperature in Inácio Martins is 10ºC. In 2013, the thermometer registered -4.5ºC.
8 City of Monte Verde in the state of Minas Gerais
Monte Verde is 1555 meters above sea level and has about 4000 inhabitants. Every year, the city records the lowest temperature in Minas Gerais, reaching 2°C.
In addition to the stunning landscapes and natural beauties, the cold climate also attracts many tourists. A postcard of the city, Pedra Redonda offers some of the most beautiful views of Monte Verde.
9 Coldest cities in Brazil – City of Campos do Jordão in São Paulo
Due to the mountainous climate of São Paulo, Campos do Jordão is one of the favorite destinations for those who want to escape the heat. Known as the “Switzerland of Brazil”, the coldest city in the state of São Paulo attracts tourists with the charm of its European architecture.
Between June and August, the thermometer in the city is around 11°C, and can reach up to 2°C at night.
10 City of São Bento Sul in Santa Catarina
Under European colonial rule, São Bento do Sul preserved the architectural and gastronomic traditions of its ancestors.
In addition, the city has several parks and preserved natural beauties that attract tourists in all seasons.
In winter, the temperature is more pleasant, around 12°C. At night, thermometers register negative temperatures, causing the formation of frost in the city.
11 Coldest cities in Brazil – City of Vacaria in Rio Grande do Sul
Vacaria, a Jesuit missionary colony, is 971 meters above sea level and has around 66,000 inhabitants. It is called “Porteira do Rio Grande” and is the largest apple producing area in Brazil.
The average local temperature is 16ºC on mild days and reaches -6.5ºC on colder days. For several years, blizzards have been recorded.
